Lahij and Basqal: choose a village trip around traditional crafts

Compare Lahij's copper craft and Basqal's silk heritage, with advice on workshops, walking, road checks and choosing a manageable village itinerary.

A village visit is more rewarding when you leave time for a conversation and a closer look at the craft. Choose Lahij or Basqal as your main destination; combining them should be a considered option, not an obligation.

Choose Lahij for an interest in copperwork

Lahij is associated with traditional copper craftsmanship. If seeing a working craftsperson matters to your visit, enquire before travelling rather than assuming a demonstration will be available. Ask permission before photographing inside a workshop, and agree the details and any cost before taking part in an activity.

Choose Basqal for an interest in silk

Basqal is known for kelaghayi silk-scarf making. Look for opportunities to understand the process rather than rushing through a shopping stop. Contact the relevant centre or workshop for current visitor arrangements. If you hope to buy something, allow time to ask about the material and care instructions.

Let the walking set the pace

Park only where permitted and explore on foot where appropriate. Ask about surfaces and access if your group includes a pushchair or someone with limited mobility. Keep residential entrances clear, avoid intrusive photography and build in a meal or tea break instead of filling every minute with another stop.

Check the route before confirming both villages

Review the actual route and daylight available, then ask the rental operator about mountain roads and vehicle suitability. Check weather and road conditions locally. Do not use an unpaved shortcut without permission. If the programme becomes mainly driving, choose one village or consider an overnight stay instead.
